Graduate Medical Education
Residency Program in Pediatrics
Teaching Conferences

Morning Report:

Morning report is held at 8 am Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Cases are presented by the floor, PICU or NICU senior resident. The conference is led by the chief residents and participants include rotating medical students, pediatric residents and faculty.

Intern report is held on Friday mornings. The chief residents lead the discussion of a case chosen by the floor interns. The format is similar to the larger morning report, but attendance is limited to first year residents and medical students to allow the discussion to focus on more basic pediatric diagnostic and management issues.

Senior morning report on Fridays consists of second and third year residents and a small group of teaching faculty. This informal conference focuses on specific diagnostic and management issues at a more advanced level.

Noon Conference:

Noon conference is presented by Rush teaching faculty Monday through Thursday. Rush has a 2 year rotating curriculum created to cover important topics in pediatric general, subspecialty and allied health fields. The curriculum is geared to provide the residents a broad based pediatric education as well as to cover the topics addressed on the American Board of Pediatrics certifying exam.

Grand Rounds:

Grand Rounds is held each Tuesday morning at 8 am. Rush has partnered with the University of Illinois and Stroger Hospitals to create a joint conference presented by local, national and international experts in their fields of pediatric clinical medicine and research.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference:

M and M conference meets the first Wednesday of the month. The conference allows physicians at all levels to learn from a clinical case, while providing a venue to establish quality assurance measures to improve patient safety and quality of care.

PL-1 Meetings:

Pl-1 meeting are held monthly to allow the interns to discuss issues or concerns with the chief residents. This meeting is also a time for the first year class to come together and get to know each other better.

Housestaff Meetings:

Pediatric Housestaff meetings are held monthly and run by the program director. Each month a different facet of the program is discussed, and attending physicians, nurses and other key staff from that rotation are invited to attend. Residents have the opportunity to discuss issues that arise during that given rotation, as well as brainstorm on means for improvement. General housestaff business is also reviewed.

Board Review:

Board review is presented monthly by one of the senior residents. Topics are divided by specialty, and each resident presents a summary of material tested on the American Board of Pediatrics exam. A portion of time is also spent reviewing boards questions, and a pediatric specialist from that area is present to answer questions and assist in the discussion.

Simulator Lab:

Rush has a state-of-the-art Patient Simulator Laboratory used to teach advanced life support skills. Interactive, technologically advanced infant, child and adult manikins are used in mock code scenarios that are videotaped. Residents’ performance is then reviewed with instructors. Procedural competencies, critical thinking, communication and teamwork are addressed. Pediatric residents attend twice yearly sessions in the lab.

Transport Meetings:

Monthly transport meeting are held with the PL-3 residents to review pediatric cases transported to Rush. These conferences are run by the pediatric intensive care and special care nursery transport attendings.

Journal Club:

Journal club meets monthly to discuss an article of interest chosen by the senior resident. Residents from all levels participate in the analysis of the paper, under the guidance of a research attending.
