Continuity Clinic
All residents have their continuity clinic at the same location, the Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center, conveniently located across the street from the hospital. This site houses both the residency practice (Pediatric Care Group) and the general pediatric faculty practice (University Pediatrics). The office also runs a separate Acute Care Clinic, seeing patients from both practices for urgent visits. The clinic population is large and diverse. With more than 27,000 visits per year, it is the largest academic general pediatric practice in Chicago.
Residents have continuity clinic one-half day per week, either in the morning or afternoon. Each clinic has 3-4 residents with a consistent faculty preceptor for all three years. Residents quickly build a panel of patients and have many opportunities to refer patients to their practice. An educational conference is held each day in clinic, following a curriculum focused on health maintenance and common out-patient problems. Second and third year residents participate in telephone triage and after hours call for PCG.
The clinic is child-friendly and recently renovated. There is a full time social worker as well as a dietician and a laboratory on site. There is an active Reach Out and Read program which enables residents to give all young patients a new book at each health maintenance visit. There are extensive patient handouts in both English and Spanish.
Residents consistently regard their experience in clinic as a strength of their education at Rush. The challenging and interesting patient population and superb teaching contribute to this.
