Chief Residents
The Pediatric Chief Residency at Rush Children's Hospital is shared
by two fourth year residents. Their key roles are education and
advocacy. Their leadership role also includes coordinating resident
schedules, attending committee meetings as resident liaisons, and
making continued improvements to the residency program. In addition, they spend 4 weeks during the year as the pediatric ward attending. They also schedule to prepare for board exam.
The chief residents for the academic year 2008-2009 are Austin Hanrahan and Shelby Joseph. Austin grew up in the St. Louis, MO area and then graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Accounting. He then went on to obtain a Masters degree in Anatomy at Saint Louis University, where he also received his medical degree. He is a HUGE St. Louis Cardinals fan. Shelby Joseph grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and went on to graduate from Creighton University with a degree in Applied Communication. She then attended medical school at Rush Medical College. After completing her chief residency, she will be moving to Dallas, Texas where she hopes to continue practicing general pediatrics in an academic setting. She loves exploring all that Chicago has to offer. Both Austin and Shelby are extremely excited about their new roles as resident advocates, and look forward to a great year.
The chief residents at Rush are selected during their second year and
in the past have been chosen from both the pediatric and med-peds
residency programs. Jackie Busse and Laura Torchen will be sharing the
chief residency for the 2009-2010 academic year. They plan to continue the tradition of teamwork and a strong commitment to resident advocacy.
