Transplantation Surgery
Deepak Mital, MD, FRCS

Dr. Mital is the pancreas transplant surgeon and director
of the Pancreas Transplant Program at Rush. He received his
surgical training in New Delhi, India, and England. He then
completed a two-year fellowship in abdominal transplantation
at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. After a
year as a senior fellow in liver transplantation at Rush,
he joined the faculty in 1994.
Stephen C. Jensik, MD
Assistant Professor of Surgery, Section of Transplantation

Dr. Jensik is associate director of the Rush Renal
Transplant Program. He attended Brown University in Rhode
Island for his undergraduate training and received his MD
degree at the University of Illinois. He received his
surgery residency training at Rush-Presbyterian-St.
Luke's Medical Center and his formal transplant training
during a fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He
has been involved with kidney and pancreas transplantation
since his return to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical
Center in 1979.
Cardiology
Ramesh Chhablani, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine
Department of Cardiology
Dr. Chhablani provides invasive and noninvasive
evaluation and treatment of coronary artery disease
prevalent in this patient population. Noninvasive
testing like Persantine or Dobutamine stress thallium
test, stress echocardiography or invasive testing
with coronary angiogram is crucial in the diagnosis
of occult or clinical coronary artery disease. Due
to an increased prevalence of more diffuse calcified
disease, "lesion specific" coronary
intervention approach with balloon angioplasty,
stent, rotational or directional atherectomy will
be provided.
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
Robert March, MD

William Piccione, MD

Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery
In coordination with Dr. Chhablani, Dr. March and Dr.
Piccione provide the evaluation and management of vascular
complications of diabetes. They also offer surgical
management of coronary artery and valvular disease. Dr.
Piccione is a cardiac and vascular surgeon. He provides
all aspects of evaluation and treatment of vascular disease.
His training includes involvement in the Joslin Diabetic
Center in Boston. Following evaluation, patients requiring
treatment of their vascular disease are evaluated for
operative therapy as well as less invasive modes of therapy
such as angioplasty and stenting.
Endocrinology
David Baldwin, Jr., MD
Assistant Professor, Section of Endocrinology
Department of Internal Medicine
Dr. Baldwin is the transplant endocrinologist for the
Pancreas Transplant Program. He has extensive experience
in the management of diabetes as well as its complications.
He is active in clinical research on diabetes and provides
patients with intensive management of diabetes.
Infectious Diseases
David Simon, MD
Associate Professor, Section of Infectious Disease
Department of Internal Medicine
Dr. Simon offers assessment and treatment of osteomyelitis
and infectious complications of diabetes. He also applies
innovative antimicrobial therapies for difficult infection
complications.
Nephrology
Janis M. Orlowski, MD
Associate Professor, Section of Nephrology
Department of Internal Medicine
Dr. Orlowski is the transplant nephrologist for the
Pancreas Transplant Program. She provides expertise in
the management and prevention of end-stage renal disease
secondary to diabetes. This division has made
world-recognized contributions to the field of diabetes
nephropathy.
Orthopedic Surgery
George Holmes, MD
Attending Orthopedic Surgeon
Department of Orthopedics
Dr. Holmes specializes in the management of foot
and ankle problems. He is instrumental in managing
patients rehabilitation following limb amputations.
Dean Scott S. Stern, DPM
Assistant Scientist, Podiatry Section
Department of Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Stern provides conservative palliative care,
in-hospital surgery and treatment of diabetic complications
involving the lower leg and foot. Both office-based care
and aggressive in-hospital treatments are important to
diabetics because of the high percentage of lower extremity
complications in this patient population.
Urology
Jerome Hoeksema, MD

Department of Urology
Dr. Hoeksema is a leader in treating urological
complications of diabetes. He is expert in the treatment
of impotence secondary to diabetes.
Ophthalmology
Jack Cohen, MD
Assistant Professor
Department of Ophthalmology
Dr. Cohen offers care to patients with diabetic
retinopathy and associated complications.
Neurology
Matthew Meriggioli, MD
Assistant Professor
Department of Neurology
Dr. Meriggioli evaluates and treats diabetic neuropathy.
He performs electrodiagnostic testing consisting of nerve
conduction studies and electromyography (including single
fiber EMG and quantitative EMG), which may aid in the
diagnosis and characterization of an underyling neuropathy.
Dr. Meriggioli is head of the Section of Neuromuscular
Disease in the Department of Neurology and director of the
Electromyography Laboratory.
