First Steps
Patient Information
The referral
At Rush, we understand that the liver transplant process can be difficult
and exhaustive both emotionally and physically. We hope to make the process
go as smoothly as possible by providing you with all the information you
need and by answering any questions or concerns you may have. During your
initial visit with the liver
transplant team, we give you a thorough review of the entire transplant
process, which usually begins with a referral to our center. Most patients
are referred to us by their liver doctor, a gastroenterologist or their
family physician (usually an internist). However, patients can also self-refer
themselves to our center.
The evaluation
On your initial visit, a transplant coordinator, a transplant surgeon,
a hepatologist and a social worker will see you. At this time we will
attempt to determine the severity of your liver disease by a taking a
thorough history and performing a physical exam. We will likely require
only a few tests: bloodwork, a chest X-ray, a CAT scan of your abdomen
and a screening test to exclude the presence of heart disease. Only a
small number of patients require additional investigations. When these
tests are complete we will present your case to the transplant committee.
The evaluation is generally very efficient and can usually be completed
in one to two days. Once the committee determines you are a candidate,
you are placed on the list for liver transplantation. The list is managed
by the United Network for Organ Sharing.
Paying for the Transplant
The majority of insurance plans provide full coverage for liver transplantation,
so patients rarely incur any our of pocket expenses. Rush readily accepts
most insurance plans. Additionally, Rush is a Medicare and State of Illinois
Medicaid approved liver transplant center, so patients with Medicare or
State of Illinois Medicaid are also fully covered for liver transplant.
