Pancreas Transplant Program Patient Handbook
National Organ-Sharing System
Once you have been accepted as a transplant candidate, you will be listed on a national organ-sharing system called the United Network for Organ Sharing. Candidates are listed by blood type, weight range and medical status. This nationwide organ-sharing system enables donor organs to be matched with and transported to recipients quickly and efficiently.
Rush University Medical Center has been an active participant in local and national organ-sharing programs for more than 15 years. The Rush surgical team is available 24 hours a day to respond to calls to evaluate and retrieve donor organs for our patients.
When a donor organ is found, the Rush Pancreas Transplant Program staff is notified. The donor is evaluated and, if appropriate, the organ is accepted by Rush transplant surgeons.
