Pancreas Transplant Program
Pancreas Transplant Program Patient Handbook

What tests are involved in a pre-transplant evaluation?

If you decide to pursue pancreas transplantation as a treatment option, you must undergo an in-depth evaluation to determine if you are a candidate for a transplant. This evaluation includes at least six parts:

    1. Tests are performed to confirm that you have Type I diabetes, which is the only form of diabetes helped by whole-pancreas transplant. Blood tests are done to determine how much insulin your pancreas secretes.

    2. A complete cardiovascular evaluation is conducted to assess the condition of your heart and blood vessels, which are often damaged by diabetes. This evaluation includes a stress test and consultation with a cardiologist (heart specialist).

    3. Your kidneys and bladder are evaluated, and an ultrasound examination of your abdomen is done to check for kidney stones, gallbladder stones, abnormal masses and other problems.

    4. Female patients must update their Pap smears, and undergo gynecological and breast exams, including mammograms. If a woman is of child-bearing age, arrangements should be made to prevent pregnancy.

    5. All patients must undergo dental exams, to ensure the absence of infections and dental disease.

    6. Blood and urine tests are done, including blood and tissue-typing to assure a good match between you and any potential organ donor.

Once these tests are completed, we will review the findings with you and discuss their significance. From this information, we can determine if a pancreas transplant is likely to offer you benefits.
