Pancreas Transplant Program
Information for Physicians

Post Pancreas Transplant Manual of Therapeutics

Admission Course

Following appropriate evaluation and determination of candidacy, the patient is placed on the cadaveric waiting list. After notification from the Regional Organ Bank of Illinois that an organ has been allocated for your recipient, the patient is contacted and requested to proceed to the hospital to undergo a quick evaluation for the determination of an acute medical problem that would prevent them from undergoing the proposed transplant. Simultaneously, the organs are evaluated and procured. The operative procedure requires approximately six hours. Following the operation, the patient may spend one night in the Intensive Care Unit at which time they are transferred to the routine care ward. Induction of immunosuppression is began the day following the transplant procedure. Conversion to oral medications is carried out over the next few days. The patient receives instructions regarding their medications, times to be taken, and side effects. The patient is also educated on the most common complications associated with the procedure so early detection is possible. On an average of 6.9 days following the transplantation the patient is discharged.
