Clinical Services at Rush Psychiatry Home
Program Description

Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in the Department of Psychiatry offer comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care that may include psychotherapy, drug therapy, cognitive therapy, group therapy and other treatments. Our experts coordinate various inpatient and outpatient programs to help patients through all stages of illness and recovery. Our experts have years of experience treating patients with a variety of mental health problems.

Services Provided

The Department of Psychiatry has five inpatient units. These include two intensive adult units, a dedicated child and adolescent psychiatry unit, and a unit reserved for treating patients with chemical dependency problems. A specialized unit for older adults is located within the Johnston R. Bowman Health Center.

Departmental services include:

  • Ambulatory psychiatric services for adults and children
  • Comprehensive behavioral health services for people with all forms of addictions and substance abuse problems
  • A cognitive therapy program
  • Comprehensive care for patients with all forms of depression
  • Care for children and adolescents with mental illness
  • Assessment and treatment of elderly patients with mental illness
  • Consultation and "second opinion" services regarding diagnoses and treatment options
  • Psychiatric home care
Clinical Team

William Scheftner, MD, is chairperson of the Department of Psychiatry. Several members of the department have been listed among Chicago’s top doctors by Castle Connolly Ltd., a well-respected source of information about U.S. health care providers and institutions. The department is staffed by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals who are known throughout Chicago and across the nation for their efforts to treat and study unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, alcohol and drug addiction, and many other forms of psychiatric illness. Behavioral Health: Rush Behavioral Health provides a variety of treatment programs and services from day and evening structure programs, to inpatient detox, if needed. We also offer individualized counseling and specialty groups. All of our locations provide a full range of mental health services.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Program: The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program at Rush provides evaluation and treatment to help young people address and overcome emotional and behavioral problems.

Cognitive Therapy: The Department of Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, pioneered the combined use of cognitive therapy and pharmacologic treatment. Cognitive therapy continues to be a major treatment modality at Rush, both for inpatients and for outpatients.

Depression Treatment & Research Center: The Woman's Board Depression Treatment & Research Center provides, through clinical research, innovative medical treatment that is generally not available in conventional psychiatric practice.

Geriatric Psychiatry Program: The Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Rush is dedicated to helping older adults address these issues so they will be able to enjoy their lives with family and friends.

Psychiatric Services (Ambulatory): Adult and Child Ambulatory Psychiatric Services at Rush has a diverse staff made up of resident physicians in training, psychiatric nurses, social workers and students. Residents and students work under the supervision of licensed faculty members.

Rush Day Hospital: The Rush Day Hospital (RDH) in Chicago, Illinois, is an intensive group-based program which offers partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) & group therapy during day & evening hours. RDH programs provide individualized treatment within a dynamic treatment environment.
