Fact Sheet: Rush-at-a-Glance
Rush University Medical Center is an academic health center that includes the 824-bed Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital (including the Rush Children's Hospital) and the 110-bed Johnston R. Bowman Health Center for the Elderly.
It is home to the six Rush Institutes, which draw together patient care and research to address major health problems with the latest treatments for arthritis and orthopedic problems, cancer, heart disease, mental illness, diseases associated with aging and neurological problems.
Integral to the medical center is Rush University, which includes Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences, the Graduate College, and a cooperative educational network of 12 liberal arts colleges and universities.
Rush is also a center for basic and clinical research, with physicians and scientists involved in nearly 1,600 investigations, many of which are multi-disciplinary in nature.
Rush is frequently ranked among the best hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and was recently named one of the nation's top hospitals by the Modern Maturity, a publication of the American Association of Retired People. And in June 2002, Rush became just the 51st medical center in the country to earn the prestigious Magnet Award for excellence in nursing services, the highest honor awarded by the American Nurses Association.
The Rush System for Health
The Medical Center is the tertiary hub of the Rush System for Health, a comprehensive health care network capable of serving about three million people through its member hospitals and their outpatient programs. The Rush System for Health include: Rush North Shore Medical Center (Skokie), Rush Oak Park Hospital (Oak Park), Riverside HealthCare (Kankakee) and Rush-Copley Medical Center (Aurora).
Research at Rush
Medical Research has been central to the mission of the Medical Center since the founding of Rush Medical College in 1837. External funding for research at Rush has been steadily growing for the past 20 years. Research awards for FY2003 totaled $67,005,115 to support more than 1,600 research projects.
Community Service
Rush reaches out to the Chicago community through a number of programs, including the following:
- Rush Community Services Initiatives Program: Organized by Rush University students, the program works to address the social and health care needs of residents in neighboring communities. Student volunteers, supervised by Rush University faculty, volunteer their services for several community-based initiatives.
- The Science and Math Excellence (SAME) Network: The SAME Network is a public-private partnership to improve the science and math skills of inner-city children through the sponsorship of after school science clubs, the construction of modern science labs in public elementary schools and other programs.
